Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, while its borders are surrounded by Russia, Ukraine, Poland Lithuania, and Latvia. The capital of Belarus is Minsk. The currency used in Belarus is Belarusian Ruble. The population was last recorded in July 2006 at 10.3 million. Cities known to be most popular for travel in Belarus are: Brest, Homel, Hrodna, Nesvizh, Sharkovshchina, Mogilev, and Vitsyebsk. In Belarus there are two official national languages, Belarusian and Russian. When visiting it is highly suggested that you learn some Russian, otherwise you'll probably have a difficult time getting around. Belarus just attained its independence in 1991 after over a hundred years of Russian rule, followed by seven decades as a constituent Republic of the USSR.
