DESCRIPTION
With its location in the South Caucuses, Armenia is considered to be both Eastern European and Western Asian. The country is landlocked and borders with Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. It’s a relatively small country both in land area and size of population with around 3.2 million people living here. Armenian is the official language and the currency is the Dram. Armenia is most visited by travelers for its culture and great scenic beauty. This was the first officially Christian country in the world so its many religious sites are among the most popular tourist attractions. The city of Echmiadzin is the spiritual capital of the country and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its popular ancient cathedral. Yerevan is the capital and largest city, though it lacks some of the character of other cities in the country. Most visited attractions here include the Erebuni Fortress. The Lake Sevan Region is very scenic, and is dominated by the large lake. This is a popular destination in the summer for its beaches, where travelers can swim and enjoy water sports, as well as visiting local monasteries and other attractions. Tourists will find a continental climate in this Northern Hemisphere location – dry and warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
