DESCRIPTION
Azerbaijan is situated in the South Caucasus, a location which means it’s in both Europe and Asia. To the east is the Caspian Sea, while neighboring countries are Iran, Armenia, Georgia and Russia. This is the 113th largest country in the world with the 91st highest population at around 8.2 million. The official language is Azerbaijani and the currency is the Manat. Compared to some of its nearby countries, Azerbaijan is very cosmopolitan and is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination. The capital and largest city is Baku, on the Caspian Sea coast. The most visited part of Baku is the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Medieval attractions. The Caucasus Mountains are very scenic and a popular destination here is the city of Sheki which has scenic forests and mountains surrounding it, and history including a palace. Second to Baku as the most visited destination is Khachmaz. Located near the sea the city has beach resorts, museums, ancient architecture and more. Azerbaijan’s climate can vary greatly across the country. Baku, for example, has hot and humid summers with cooler and wetter winters.
