DESCRIPTION
Bhutan is a small South East Asian country, and with its location in the Himalayas it lies between India and Tibet. It is the 131st largest country in the world and has a low population of only around 675,000 people. The official language is Dzongkha and the currency is the Ngultrum though the Indian rupee is also accepted. Bhutan is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination and is best known for its spectacular scenic landscapes and its very welcoming and friendly people. Being situated in the Himalayas the landscape is dominated by valleys and mountains. Among the most visited attractions is the city of Paro with its nearby cliff-side monasteries of Taktsang and Drakhapo. Thimphu is the capital and largest city where the best tourist attractions include the National Folk Heritage Museum, the Botanical Gardens, and the Takin Reserve. Bhutan is best known as being a great trekking destination, giving travelers the best of the scenic vistas the country is famous for. The climate here varies with altitude and can range from subtropical to polar, with five distinct seasons – summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and spring.
