DESCRIPTION

Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, which is to the southwest. Cambodia is a poverty stricken nation, with much of its population living on less than US $1 a day, living without many of the basic things most other countries consider to be necessities. Recently the tourist industry in Cambodia has been on the rise with most tourists visiting Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, both of which are known for it’s temples, beaches, sports, luxury hotels, and nightlife. In addition to these two popular cities, other cities well known are Banlung- great waterfalls and national parks, Battambang- the 2nd largest city after the capital, Kep- resort town not to be missed, Kratie- where one can enjoy the river and get a close look at the endangered river dolphins and Phnom Penh- the capital and largest city. The official Cambodian currency used for money is the Cambodian riel, but the US dollars are accepted at most places. Major business establishments take credit cards, but other than that it is recommended to use cash. The food is tasty and cheap, many times including a stronger sour taste in the dishes. Cambodians are known to drink until they're hammered, many of which enjoy their favorite beers: Anchor, Beer Lao, Tiger, and ABC Stout. Palm wine, rice wine, and Golden muscle wine are also popular alcoholic drinks, the latter being a black concoction made from deer antlers and assorted herbs equaling a 35% alcohol content. Prostitution is illegal, however wide spread, so keep your guard up if someone is acting a bit too friendly.
