DESCRIPTION
Odense is the third-largest city in Denmark, and looks like it jumped right out of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. Perhaps that’s because the author was born here, in the capital city of Funen Island. His birthplace is one of the city’s attractions, as are the gardens that commemorate his birth and the museum of his life. One of the city’s non-literary claims to fame is the St. Knud Cathedral, which features a gilded alter and is the final resting place for King Knud, who was murdered and then canonized here. Its location makes it an easy day-trip destination due to its proximity to Copenhagen, as well as the coast.
