DESCRIPTION

Turku, one of the busiest port cities in Finland, used to be the Finnish capital. It fell on bad times and lost that honor to Helsinki in 1812, when the Russians were in charge. To top it off, Turku suffered a fire in 1828 that destroyed much of the city. That hasn’t stopped the city from rising from the ashes and drawing tourists who are looking for a destination with history and charm. One of the most popular sights is the restored Turku Castle. It’s the largest surviving medieval building in Finland, built over 700 years ago. Here, travelers will find the Historical Museum of Turku, which offers a glimpse into the city’s past. June may be one of the best times to visit Turku, during the Medieval Market celebration. There are also several other music festivals during the summer months, which is also when you’ll find the weather in Finland the nicest.
