DESCRIPTION

Situated within both the Mid-Atlantic and the Upland South Regions of the USA, West Virginia is the only state to be located entirely within a mountain range, namely the Appalachian Mountains. It’s the 41st largest state in the country, and has a population of around 1.8 million people. Nicknamed the Mountain State, West Virginia has a lot to offer travelers who enjoy great scenic beauty. The Monongahela National Forest is a huge area of forest with plenty of scenic vistas and 500 miles (800km) of hiking trails. Tourists can participate in fun sports here such as hunting, fishing, whitewater rafting, boating and mountain climbing. Spruce Knob is the highest point in the state and is situated within the forest, as is Seneca Rocks, popular with climbers. The capital and largest city is Charleston, and is most visited for its attractive buildings and relaxing atmosphere. The State Capitol Building is here, as well as the Kanawha State Forest. Harpers Ferry is the state’s most popular tourist destination. This small town played an important part in the Civil War. Travelers will find a climate which varies with location, though generally hot and humid summers and mild to cold winters.
