El Salvador is situated in Central America and is one of the region’s smallest countries, yet has about 7 million residents. Apart from the Pacific Ocean coastline, it borders with Guatemala and Honduras. The currency is the US Dollar and the official language is Spanish. Despite its small size, El Salvador has much to offer travelers. Tourists who enjoy relaxing on a beach or surfing the waves will love it here as this is becoming one of the world’s top locations for surfing. La Libertad region is the most visited area for surfing, and particularly El Sunzal Beach, which is said to be in the top 10 best surfing destinations in the world. San Salvador is the capital and largest city. This cosmopolitan destination has a fun and vibrant nightlife as well as shopping, restaurants, museums, parks and more. Among the top attractions in El Salvador are the Mayan ruins. The ancient farming village of Joya de Ceren was wonderfully preserved under volcanic ash and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also the Chalchuapa area has a number of archaeological treasures such as the Mayan pyramid at Tasumal. The country also has great scenic beauty and a tropical climate, and is best visited in the dry season – November to April.
