DESCRIPTION

The Central American country of Honduras is the 102nd largest country in the world and has the 96th highest population with around 7.5 million inhabitants. It borders with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and also has coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea, and Pacific Ocean. Spanish is the official language and the currency is the Lempira. Travelers will find Honduras has a variety of attractions and makes a good alternative to some of the more popular Central American countries. The capital and largest city is Tegucigalpa, and while it does have its attractive parts, tourists tend to avoid the city in favor of others. Comayagua for example is more frequented by travelers. This is most visited for its great colonial architecture. Evidence of the ancient Maya civilization can be seen at the Copan ruins, which are said to be at least as good as other famous Mayan ruins on the continent. With its extensive coastlines, tourists will find many great beach choices available. The Bay Islands are particularly popular, especially for scuba diving, with the world’s second largest coral reef nearby. The subtropical climate gives Honduras hot and humid weather, though its location puts the country within the path of hurricanes.
