DESCRIPTION
The Republic of Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and has a border with Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, plus coasts on both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. This is the 97th largest country in the world, and with a population of around 5.8 million it is the 110th most populated. Spanish is the official language here, and the currency is the Cordoba. With two long coastlines and two large lakes, Nicaragua is a popular destination for tourists who have fun in the water! The city of Granada is situated on the shores of the largest lake and is most visited for its attractive colonial buildings and churches, while the city of Leon is popular with travelers for the same reasons. Managua is the capital city, and though not so frequented by tourists it still holds attractions such as the Tiscapa Lagoon and Palacio Nacional. This scenic country also has many natural attractions including Masaya Volcano National Park, biosphere reserves, wildlife refuges and more. The location of Nicaragua provides a tropical climate that is particularly hot on the Pacific coast. The Caribbean coast can occasionally be in the path of hurricanes.
