DESCRIPTION

New Caledonia is an overseas French territory, situated in the South Pacific Ocean about 746 miles (1200km) east of Australia and 932 miles (1500km) north of New Zealand. The island nation of Vanuatu is a little way to the north east. Being a French territory since 1853, French is the official language, though the currency is the CFP franc. Just under 250,000 people live here. New Caledonia is most visited as a beach destination and has plenty of beautiful scenic coastlines to enjoy. Travelers will find this is a relaxing location, and quieter than some other more well known South Pacific island destinations. The main island is called Grand Terre, plus there are several smaller islands too. Noumea is the capital and largest city, and is situated on Grand Terre. Most visited attractions include a number of interesting museums, colonial mansions, the zoo and forest park and the aquarium. Scuba diving and snorkeling on the coral reef off the coast of Grand Terre, and also off the Isle of Pines is very popular, while the Loyalty Islands feature popular rainforests. The semi-tropical climate will keep tourists warm year round, though from November to March tropical cyclones are possible.
