DESCRIPTION
La Rochelle, France is just so traditionally French that it enchants visitors with its style and character. Any trip here should begin in the old port, or Vieux Port, where simple fishing boats mix with luxury sail boats. It is here that the city’s defensive forts can be seen, and it’s hard not to notice the Tour de la Chaine and Tour St-Nicolas towers. If you have the energy to climb a lot of stairs, you can rest at the top while taking in some great city views. The street known as the Rue du Palais is lined with wonderful examples of 17th- and 18th-century French buildings. The brandy that takes its name from the nearby city of Cognac is a good reason for a day-trip tasting expedition, or you can stay in town and enjoy La Rochelle’s French wine.
