DESCRIPTION

Nimes may be a city in France, but it’s the Roman history, not the French one, that draws tourists to this destination. In the time when Caesar Augustus was the head of the Roman Empire, Nimes was an important city, and today, some of the best-preserved ruins outside of Italy can be found here. The biggest attraction is the Roman amphitheater – even it’s upper story is intact – that was built to seat 24,000 and is still in-use for bullfights. La Maison Carrée is now a museum, but it was built on another Roman structure, and a walk through the Jardin de la Fontaine, or Fontaine Gardens, will take you past the ruins of the Temple of Diana.
