DESCRIPTION
Palermo is the capital city of Sicily, and is one of the world’s most conquered places. It was so sought after that Arabic rulers, Roman rulers, Spanish rulers and more wanted to lay claim to the city. Now tourists are laying claim to the cultural blend of north, south, east and west combined with the medieval architecture and wonderful weather – Palermo gets less rain than any other Italian city. One of the best examples of the city’s “melting pot” nature is the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, as its architecture combines Baroque, Gothic, Byzantine and Roman styles. Another popular attraction is the Norman Palace, with its Palatine Chapel. There’s a secret beneath the city – the catacombs, which make for an interesting spot on your tourist itinerary.
