Rome, Italy definitely takes La Dolce Vita, or the good life, to heart. It’s a fabulous, pulsing city where the ancient buildings seem to just pop out of the landscape. There’s no bigger attraction in Rome than its Colosseum. Even though so much of it was plundered, standing inside and experiencing just the feat of its construction is a hair-on-your-neck-raising experience. Beware of the tricks the gypsies here play on the tourists to get your money, as well as how much it will cost you to take your photo with a “gladiator.” Right next to the Colosseum is the Roman Forum. This is where Rome was at its highest splendor, and tourists walking along the stone paths are treading where Caesar walked. The domed Pantheon is a treat for architecture buffs – the interior is spectacular, with the oculus in the center of the dome, which lets rain in and the slanted floors that whisk the water away. Be sure to visit Vatican City, especially the museums, to see the marvelous Sistine Chapel. The best treat after a hot day of sight-seeing is a cold, smooth gelato. Perhaps grab a cone and sit on the famed Spanish Steps for a session of people-watching
