Once called the “Florence on the Elbe,” Dresden, Germany is moving back to its former status. The city recently celebrated its 800th birthday, and is now trying to restore and rebuild areas of the city that were hit and then neglected after being bombed in WWII. It was the kings of Saxony that put Dresden on the map, and the Old City is the historical center where they concentrated their efforts. The most popular attraction here is the Zwinger Palace, which features a beautiful exterior façade and the famous “Madonna Sistina” by Raphael inside. There’s also a collection of gold and jewels in the Palace’s Green Vault that is worth a place on a tourist’s itinerary. Dresden’s landmark structure however is the renovated Semper Opera House, and performances here are a good way to experience the culture of the city.
