The Romans were the first visitors to the city of Split in Croatia, thanks in large part to its Adriatic coastline, and now modern-day tourists are following in their footsteps. Diocletian built a castle here to take advantage of the sulfur baths, and is now a popular attraction among visitors. There is also a cathedral that was built in his honor, housing the two sphinxes that he brought to Split from Egypt. There are a few beaches to enjoy, while some think a walk along the Riva promenade is a good way to enjoy the waterfront. Many visitors choose to take the ferry to nearby Brac Island and the beach at Golden Horn. The best weather is during the summer high season months of July and August.
