The Bermuda Islands, also known as the Somers Isles, is located around 1,100 miles northeast of Miami, Florida and 580 miles east of North Carolina. Although most people think of Bermuda as only one island, it’s actually made up of 138 islands. Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the archipelago, Bermuda, is Hamilton and the main languages spoken are English (official) and Portuguese. In 2005, Bermuda had the world’s highest GDP per captia at over $76,000, mostly derived from its large financial sector as well as tourism. Tourists not only love the pink sand and cerulean blue ocean, which both contribute to the beautiful beaches; but also enjoy the subtropical climate, which is warmed from the Gulf Stream. The currency used as money in Bermuda is the Bermudian dollar. Some of the most popular activities to do and visit in the Bermuda Islands are scuba diving its many ship wrecks and coral reefs, snorkeling Church Bay, visiting the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo, and the most popular tourist attraction of all is the Royal Naval Dockyard, which includes the Bermuda Maritime Museum. Believe it or not, despite the large amount of visitors, it is not possible to rent a car on these islands; however, visitors commonly rent scooters to ride throughout, or can always use the public transportation, which is inexpensive and convenient. The population of this gorgeous island was just over 65,000 residents in July 2005. The best beaches in Bermuda are known to be on the Southampton Parish. Some of the most popular cities and destinations in the Bermuda islands are St. George, Flatts Village, Somerset Village, Hamilton, Baileys Bay, and Horseshoe Bay Beach.
